How Do We Serve Students Displaced by the Earthquake in Haiti?

U.S. schools are beginning to see an influx of students displaced by the January 2010 catastrophic earthquake and aftershock in Haiti. Many of these students will need extra assistance in recovering from this traumatic displacement. The McKinney-Vento Act may provide key services and support for eligible students.

Schools have many questions about serving displaced students, including:
  • Which displaced students qualify for McKinney-Vento rights and services?
  • Are refugee students from other countries eligible for McKinney-Vento rights and services?
  • How should I respond when a student's immunization history is unknown?
